Mechanical Music in the Movies
By Dan Robinson

The recent posts on mechanical music machines in movies remind me
of two movies that I came across on TV featuring carousels with
band organs.

The 1989 film "Chances Are," starring Robert Downey Jr. and Cybill
Shepherd, has a scene at the Glen Echo Park Dentzel Carousel in
Glen Echo, Maryland, with the Wurlitzer 165 band organ playing. The
two characters are standing outside the carousel, and there is a
brief close-up of it. Throughout the scene, the Wurlitzer 165 plays
the tune "Maytime."

The 1986 film "Just Between Friends," starring Ted Danson and Mary
Tyler Moore, has a scene at the Griffith Park Spillman carousel in
Los Angeles, California, back when it had the original Wurlitzer 165.
The two characters are shown riding the carousel with their children
and later sitting outside near it, but I don't remember what tunes
were playing.
