Cleaning the Soundboard
By John A. Tuttle

Hi All, I would imagine that with the introduction of a number of
'dry' dust rags and 'electro-statically charged' cleaning utensils,
dusting the soundboard these days is a walk-in-the-park compared to
the way we did it at Tusting Piano Co. in the mid-seventies.

Then, we used a 'soundboard cleaning rod' and a soft cotton rag --
usually a well-worn-out T-shirt. The 'rod' is nothing more than a
piece of spring steel about 1/2" wide and 24" long. It has a tapered
hole in one end so you can insert an end of the rag. Then the rest of
the rag is twisted around the end, covering the steel. From there it
is a matter of pushing the rag under the strings, etc., etc.

The soundboard cleaning rod, named 'sounding board steel', item #16104,
is still available at APSCO.

Musically,

John A. Tuttle
