Connecting MIDI Wireline to Laptop Computer
By John McClelland

Does anyone know how to link a laptop computer to an external MIDI
transmitting device? We've got a roll reader and want to use
a laptop to store the data. We have plans to use a serial port
device but would like an increase in speed getting the data into
the PC. (Robbie, help me out if the question is unclear.)

Regards,

[ I'm helping John with his portable transcriber system. Initially
[ an Octet UM1 will convert the switch signals to standard MIDI
[ wireline signals, and a MIDI file will be stored at the laptop PC.
[ Later we'd like to use high-speed MIDI (500 kbps), if available
[ for a laptop. Otherwise a dedicated external commutator might be
[ built to transmit distance-tagged events to the computer. -- Robbie
