Connecting MIDI Wireline to Laptop Computer
By Norm Gibson

I have just finished my band organ. It has 97 wooden pipes in 6 ranks
and sounds great.

I am using my home computer to send the MIDI message to the organs MIDI
boards. I purchased an IBM ThinkPad Compaq LTE 5380 Laptop computer to
use on the organ. That did not work.

I found out first that the ports on laptops are only serial and not
designed for MIDI signals out. I than contacted a company, MIDIator
Systems, that makes a small converter which goes in-line so laptops can
work. Problem is, if you have an older laptop you do not have a serial
port which is fast enough to make it work (e.g., type 16550 buffered
serial port). So, since I do not have a fast enough serial port all of
my efforts have failed.

I need help! What are others using? How expensive a laptop do I need?
I still have the MIDIator Systems (MS-101) unit; can I find a laptop so
I can take the organ out of the house?
