Which operating system do you use?  If it's Win95 or Win98 (or Win2000)
then you can use Midiman's Portman/S.  See http://www.midiman.com/

If you have Windows NT, this does not work -- you have to use the
Midiman BiPort 2x4.  All that works very fine for my laptop (which is,
however, not an older one, but I cannot believe that MIDI will need
fast serial ports).  Maybe Midiman knows more about this; in Germany,
at least, they have very helpful support.
