Leather for Ampico Pump

Hi All,  I would like to use Kangaroo leather on my Ampico A pump.
I am not sure what thickness to go with and would appreciate any
suggestions.  Should this be leather be sealed?  If so, with what?
(I don't mean to open up this can of worms again!)
