Monkeys & Barrel Organs
By Robbie Rhodes

Both the capuchin monkey and Barbary ape are associated with the
organ grinder. From my 7-kilogram Merriam's dictionary of 1927:

Barbary ape -- an ape (Macaca inua) of North Africa and Gibraltar Rock,
being the only monkey inhabiting Europe. It is often trained by
showmen.

capuchin -- a long-tailed South American monkey (Cebus capucinus),
having the forehead naked and wrinkled, with the hair on the crown
resembling a monk's cowl (capuche). The name is from the Italian
cappucio, a hood, as worn by Saint Francis and later the Franciscan
monks.
