At the risk of heresy, there are programs that run on a PC or Macintosh
to reduce or remove noise.  You would record the record onto your
computer, apply the noise reduction software, then record (burn) a CD.

I don't have any personal experience with these programs and they can
be pricey.  I'm interested in reading a magazine review that compares
the performance of these programs, if anyone knows of such an article.
