Accompaniment Rolls
By Dale Rowe

In response to the recent queries about accompaniment rolls, a number
of companies offered this service to their customers upon request.

While working at a piano store in New York City, one of my first tasks
was to re-arrange the used piano roll section (a room on the 3rd floor,
above the store). There were close to 5000 rolls to be organized.

While performing this arduous task, I came across quite a number of
accompaniment rolls, produced by or for the Sherman & Clay Co. These
were listed as "Accompaniment for Cello". Unfortunately, as is in the
case of accompaniment rolls, the sheet music for these rolls were
missing. Upon examination of these rolls, it turns out that the rolls
were custom made, and then spooled and boxed (on used spools and boxes,
some boxes still retaining their original labels).

Alas, the piano store is no more, and probably so the above mentioned
accompaniment rolls. I don't know if this has been of any help,
but here it is any way.
