Accuracy of Recut Music Rolls
By Larry Toto

I have found that my expectations for recuts have evolved over the
years. The more recut rolls that I have acquired, the less enthusiastic
I have become about recuts.

How is it that 80 years ago we had the technology to make such
wonderfully precise punch holes, and today, I sometimes have to toss
the recut into a box labeled, "Don't _ever_ play this one again --
too agonizing." The box could also be named, "Don't sell this or
your conscience will bother you."

Recuts are entirely hit-or-miss, in my opinion. The worst offenders
are the Ampico recuts. I have one roll that plays nicely until 2/3
into the roll, then breaks down into what sounds like two different
rolls playing at the same time, with different signatures.

If I want accurately cut rolls, I buy the old stuff.
