After downloading numerous MIDI files from the internet, I realised,
like Tom Lear, that to play a "real" instrument most MIDI files needed
to be modified to ensure that there is always a minimum time off
between any two identical notes

My solenoid operated harpsichords require up to 100 millisecond gap
to repeat consistently .  This is probably significantly larger than
for a solenoid operated piano.  Here is my straightforward solution.

Use Cakewalk along with a CAL program named "Unlap31".  This CAL
program will allow you easily and flawlessly set any minimum gap that
you desire.  Other CAL programs can do weird and wonderful things.
CAL stands for Cakewalk Application Language and is an event processing
language that can be used to extend _some_ Cakewalk programs with
custom editing commands.

If you are, like myself, incapable of writing Cal programs, this is
not a problem since many CAL programs are available to download from
the internet.
