What Is Salon Music?
By Jon Miller

I've come across the term "Salon Music" a few times in dealing with
piano rolls. Could someone give me a good definition of this term
(if there is one).

Thanks!
John W Miller

 [ Editor's note: From my 7-kilogram Merriam dictionary of 1927:
 [
 [ salon (French): 1. An apartment for the formal reception of
 [ company; a saloon; hence, a fashionable assemblage [of people].
 [
 [ saloon (from Fr. salon, of Greek origin: a hall or room):
 [
 [ 1. A spacious and elegant apartment for the reception of company
 [ or for works of art; a hall of reception; a large room or parlor.
 [
 [   2.  A hall for public entertainment or amusement;
 [
 [   3.  A place where intoxicating liquors are sold and drunk;
 [ a grogshop; -- used commonly of a place where there are no
 [ lodgings or regular service of meals as in a hotel.
 [
 [ Thus (in American speech of 1927) the carrousel salon of France
 [ seems to be an elegant hall where fashionable people assembled to
 [ enjoy the carousel and dance while 'salon music' was played.
 [
 [ Music rolls that feature 'salon music' might evoke either meaning:
 [ the high-society salon or the grogshop saloon! ;-)
