Audio-to-MIDI Conversion
By John A. Tuttle

Hi All, I found a program called AmazingMIDI which is advertised as
a 'Polyphonic Music Transcriber'. The unregistered version allows you
to create a maximum file size of 30 seconds. To use the program you
must first create a WAV file from the original audio file.

This program is rather complex and has numerous filtering and timing
options. I have tried to convert a number old audio files of me
playing my Lauter upright. The output MIDI file has been only sketchy
at best. I think one problem is that you must first create a sample
audio file which the program uses to interpret the audio file. Another
problem is that MIDI is 'on the beat', whereas a live recording is
seldom in perfect time. So even though you end up with a MIDI file,
none of the notes fall on the measure lines, except by accident.

A quick search at www.google.com using the keyword "AmazingMIDI"
yielded some 3000+ hits. It appears that creating MIDI files out
of WAV files has come a long way in the last year.

Musically,
