Origin of Name "Jukebox"
By Colin MacKinnon

Thank you, Lee, for that interesting information on Capehart.
Co-incidentally a local radio station raised the origins of the name
"jukebox".

Someone rang in to mention an old film in which the Negro workers in
the south of USA went down to the "juke-joint" for a wild night of
music, dancing, drinking and debauchery. I did find references on the
Internet to a vague connection with "jute", the fibre, possibly used or
grown in the South. There seemed to be a connotation that a juke-joint
catered for the basic human instincts and may have included a "whore
house".
