Great Dorset Steam Fair
By Hans van Oost

For Hauke Marxsen and other prospective visitors of the Dorset Steam
fair I have some tips which may be of help (and warning! (-:

1. Prepare yourself and your car for getting completely yellow. The
steam fair is held on a mowed wheat field full of stubble on yellow
clay. Without rain it is very dusty, after rain it is a mud pool!
Always wear rubber boots at the festival.

2. If you don't want to walk too much, be there early in the morning.
The car park is on a sloping field, and it is huge, so the first cars
to arrive are nearest to the fair. Use good new tyres, because the car
park is very slippery after rain, and you will have to drive it uphill
to the road when you leave. I was lucky to get off by myself several
years ago (after some tries), but many cars had to be towed away by
tractors!

3. There are lots of B&B's in the neighbourhood, all in tiny villages.
They are good, not too expensive, and you may be exposed to the
(in)famous British breakfast if you like, but most of them will be
fully booked right now. Please hurry and use the Internet.

Please have a good trip. Too bad I cannot be there this year!

regards from the Netherlands,

Hans van Oost
