Great Dorset Steam Fair
By Larry Leonard

Dear Sir, I attended with a friend in 1996 and found it a most
wonderful event and I'm hoping to return again sometime. One really
needs more than one day to get the true 'flavor' of the Fair. Parking
(I would suggest early in the a.m.) is adequate. The fair is laid out
and one can purchase a booklet with maps and listings of those in
attendance.

The year we were there, there must have been about 100 band organs,
each operated by a steam engine. Plowing by steam engine was done in
a field, and there were competition events between steam engines, etc.,
such as hill climbing. I found one money-changing bank and their rate
of exchange was more than what one might find in the city.

As to B&B accommodations, there aren't that many in the area. We stayed
at a very large house with a thatched roof and wonderful accommodations
and food and close by, perhaps 10 miles at the most. The name at that
time was Churchview Guest House, Winterbourne abbas, Dorchester, Dorset
DT2 9LS, hosts Michael and Jane Deller, phone (0305)889296 Good luck.

We didn't see any handicapped vehicles as it is many acres of
grassland.
