10-3/8" Wide Music Rolls With Wood Flanges
By Adam G. Ramet

[ Ref. 040505 MMDigest, Unknown Music Rolls With Wood Flanges

The rolls 10-3/8" wide described are 58-note rolls for use on Story &
Clark "Apollo" push-up piano players and also the Story & Clark "Orpheus"
player organ. The rolls for these instruments were made (usually) by
QRS, Chicago, however I have seen a very few that were obviously made
for them by Aeolian (in Meriden), these being made from their usual
58-note masters but trimmed to 10-3/8". The 58-note 10-3/8" QRS rolls
also were made with pin ends (as commonly seen on standard Aeolian 58-
and 65-note rolls) for use on the Bellolian player organ.

So, for reference, there are actually four 58-note roll formats:

10-1/8" : Aeolian: standard pin end spool playing top to bottom
10-1/4" : Wilcox & White: smaller pin ends playing reverse direction
    inside out
10-3/8" : Story & Clark: brass chuck ends playing top to bottom
10-3/8" : Bellolian: standard pin ends playing top to bottom

Sincerely

Adam Ramet
