10-3/8" Wide Music Rolls With Wood Flanges
By Nicholas Simons

Maggie Richardson's mystery rolls are most probably 58-note organ rolls
for the Story and Clark organ. Rolls for this machine were made by
Story and Clark and QRS. They have a paper width of 10-3/8 inch and
the same musical scale as the more common Aeolian Grand rolls, which
are slightly narrower. The holes are spaced at six to the inch.

I am a bit confused by Maggie's statement that the rolls do not appear
to be played from top to bottom. Story and Clark rolls do play
conventionally from top to bottom. Is it possible that someone has
respooled the paper back-to-front so they appear to play from bottom to
top? When correctly spooled and held with the square hole to the right,
the paper should come off the front of the spool downwards, with the
label on the outside of the roll.

Of course, I may be totally wrong and the rolls may be something else
altogether.
