Pratt-Read Wind Motor
By Michael Hamilton

Hello all, I have a few questions about my Pratt-Read player.

It seems that the original wind motor was replaced at some point,
I don't know when, and I'm not sure if I should replace it with an
original or leave it alone. The one that is in the player now is a
5-pneumatic type, a little too deep, and when the hammers fall back
they knock on the wind motor pneumatics.

It may also be a down-grade replacement, if the original was one of
the 10-pneumatic types. One of the motors is shown on page 132,
illustration 6-108, of "Player Piano Servicing and Rebuilding", and
the transmission is exactly what my piano has, although I do not have
the complex tracking device shown in illustration 6-109.

Then, I'm curious to know how early the stacks with pouches in front
were used. The stack shown on page 130, figure 6-98, looks like the
stack I have, with the wood caps on the lifters, and the horizontal
pneumatics (compared with other Pratt Read illustrations). My piano
was dated to 1917-18, would this stack fit the time period?

Thanks for any suggestions,

Michael Hamilton
