Seek 9' Steinway for Duo-Art Installation
By Bruce Grimes

Steinways -- Cheaper by the Dozen

35 years ago I bought a 7-foot 1910 Steinway, lengthened it 6 inches,
built a new keyboard for it, changed the case from ebony single leg
to Georgian double leg. All this to fit around an original electric
long-play top action, one of 20 produced. I installed a fan system
expression system in it. It also has a pedal box, copied from a 1910
"O".

Thanks to the generosity of Mel Septon, I have another original
long-play top action. It needs an appropriate piano to play. I have
a prototype in the my 7' 6" Steinway, and am now looking for a Model
"D" (9 foot) Steinway to lengthen. David Snyder will do the board, and
the new action. It may be a Georgian case, but other styles are being
considered. It will be a pedal-electric.

What does this have to do with "cheaper by the dozen?"

Well, Aeolian built ten 9' 6" Steinway Duo-Arts. One more makes eleven.
If there is any one who would like a 9' 6", it would be cheaper to
build two (probably under $100,000), making twelve. It will be done in
a manner that would make Aeolian Co. proud.

Interested parties should contact me this winter. I would be happy to
show and play for you the 7' 6" piano.

One other thing: the 7' 6" is my first love, but it might be available
in a year or three.
