I found an interesting "freeware" MIDI editor that uses a virtual
piano roll as a user interface.  "TS-MIDI Editor" can be found at

TallStick Software company also have (for $35 US) a program that
they claim will convert audio files such as MP3 or audio CD tracks
to MIDI files.
