Electrifying a Player Piano
By Roger Waring

I have been asked to carry out the electrification of a fairly modest
upright player that I have recently repaired. The instrument is pretty
well airtight, and pedals comfortably. However, the space in the lower
piano well is very limited, and I have a problem with where to fit the
motor suction elbow and/or check valve.

Anywhere on the front of the horizontal reservoir will foul the bottom
door. The rear is very tight due to the proximity of the reservoir to
the strings and the presence of two governors for the split stack, and
a stack cut-off reroll valve, all in the centre of the reservoir. All
supply tubes are 1" diameter. On the right hand side is a very convenient
tube to the wind motor governor that feeds directly from the reservoir.

I am considering inserting a T-shaped 1" connector and tube to the motor,
in line between the reservoir and the wind motor governor. Although
this is position is not what is recommended in the Reblitz book, can
anyone suggest possible problems with performance? I anticipate no
more that 12" of water gauge suction being provided. Many thanks for
any advice.
