New Orleans Riverboat Calliopes
By Charles Schoppe

Hello All, In response to George Glastris' reference to the steam
calliopes on the Delta Queen and Mississippi Queen, both of these
riverboats do indeed have calliopes. My wife and I have enjoyed
traveling on both of these boats on several occasions. The calliopes
are always played when leaving the various stops along river, and
the passengers are also encouraged to play; some do fairly well.

This past year we traveled on the Mississippi Queen and they played
the calliope in the TVA locks on the Tennessee River. Now, you haven't
heard such a sound as a calliope being played inside a lock at low
water line! Neither of these calliopes are outfitted with roll
players, so every performance is done with a talented keyboardist.

I also want to thank Terry Smythe for his latest batch of files and
his tireless work in preserving piano rolls. I have downloaded each
of his MIDI batches and enjoy them on my Pianocorder. Thanks, Terry!

Merry Christmas!
Chuck Schoppe
