High Prices Paid for Duo-Art Rolls at Auction
By John McClure

Hi fellow collectors, I just want to share my recent experience
in selling Duo-Art rolls I had on eBay. In my midlife downsizing
I sacrificed my beloved Steinway XR, and then last November I put my
15-year collection of Duo-Art rolls up for auction on eBay. Almost
every one of the 100 or so rolls sold for more than $50 and many
at the $100 mark and more per roll!

I also learned that selling 100 similar items at the same time is an
undertaking for a really organized person, and of course delivering
them in multiples, in many cases around the world. A lot of good
Duo-Art pianos ended up in the British colonies, especially Australia,
and they are now in new collections.

I feel that the rolls brought these prices because of the music
I carefully chose. I liked hot 20's jazz and recognizable 1920s-30s
tunes, especially Cole Porter and all the great novelty piano songs
by Arden, Ohman, Carroll, Milne and the wonderful lady pianist Pauline
Alpert. In a sense they were all "feel good" make-you-want-to-dance
show-off-the-Duo-Art kind of rolls. No classical, no tone poems and
nothing serious. Is anyone interested in recutting these items
again? Obviously there is a demand for them,

Thanks, John McClure
