I'm somewhat surprised that much of the conversation surrounding the
longevity of compact disks has relied on articles published in the
popular press, and even those articles are mere quotations of opinions
given by 'experts' in the field.

Has anyone found CD's, recordable or otherwise, that have actually
failed?  Someone mentioned that the recordable CD is about ten years
old by now.  So, have any of these failed, and if so, in what manner?

 [ I found that my CD players were failing (I believe the tiny laser
 [ light source deteriorates).  But I keep the marginal players to
 [ check the quality when I make new recordable CDs.  -- Robbie
