I've found dates on several uprights at the lower treble back of the
soundboard, on the outside, that often predate by about two years the
serial number on the plate.  I have presumed this was the year the back
and board were made.  I have heard of pianos being given serial numbers
at about the time of completion, and presumed this to be part of that
process
