Value of Mason & Hamlin Ampico
By Randy Hammond

I really enjoy this site and I am not an expert on all of this stuff by
any means. I have always wanted to upgrade my Ampico to a 5'8" Mason
and Hamlin, Ampico A, standard case is fine. What is the going rate
for these instruments? I might have a chance at some point in the next
couple of years to purchase one locally. The piano has not had the
benefit of reasonable climate control (it has been excessively dry) and
it is probably going to have to be totally redone. This means new
strings, pin plank, hammers, regulation, refinishing and a total redo
of the Ampico. The player was rebuilt in the early 70's but it is
completely dead right now.

I always thought that these were about in the league with Steinway
Duo-Arts but the Steinways Duo-Arts seem to have taken a slump. There
have been several on eBay that go without a bid.

I would appreciate answers on this one as to an approximate value on
this instrument and also as to the value of one that is fully restored.
I might be far smarter and just hold out for one that is already done
well. Again, I know that a B or art cases change the picture
dramatically. This is a standard 5'8" A that is going to need a
complete rebuild and refinishing.
