Here's yet another twist(!) to the rubber band issue.  Many people
have suggested placing a rubber band between the paper and the left
(removable) flanges of Ampico (and other?) rolls in order to keep
the edges from tearing.  Does this really work?  Do we have the same
problem with rubber deterioration?
