These sweeties are also known as "wine gums."  Wikipedia is one of the
available sources to learn more:

  similar to gumdrops </wiki/Gumdrop>, except they are not sugar-coated.
  They are manufactured from animal gelatin </wiki/Gelatin>, obtained from
  rendering of bones, mixed with sweeteners, flavourings and colourings.

Just what Don Teach was writing.  He was very correct, using the word
"basically".  Gelatin is basically used for a very wide range of
products, apart from its use as hide glue.  Use Google.
