Jean-Baptist Jacotel and His Organs
By Colette Van Bodegom

-- non-subscriber, please reply to sender and MMD --

I have been looking for references to the surname Jacotel for some
time, as I know only a few things about my Jacotel ancestors. I know
that they emigrated from France, sailing from the Port of Lisbon, to
Quebec, settling in the Montreal area.

Most of the Jacotel children were musicians, usually in the area of
keyboard. I know one married an opera singer and toured Canada. One
bucked family tradition and went into medicine, eventually practicing
in a French-speaking community in the United States.

I would like to find out as much information as I can about the Jacotel
family. Leon Debien made a post to the Mechanical Music Digest that
had some information. Can anyone here add more?

[Leon Debien's posting to the 030904 MMD was in search of information
[about Jean-Baptiste Jacotel, maker of organs and automata, newly ar-
[rived in Canada in 1820. He reports that Jacotel manufactured in
[the Montreal area at least six cylinder organs and two manual ones,
[dying August 1832 of cholera. Jacotel was also involved with auto-
[mata. The mention of automata leads to the question of whether
[Christian Bailly's books might have information on the Jacotel
  [family?
