Duo-Art vs. Ampico vs. Welte-Mignon
By Bob Taylor

Comparing these three systems often gets argumentative in a hurry.
I'm not going there. They are all good. What surprises me is the
strong comment I just read from MMDer Kent Zacherl [080215 MMDigest].
As proof of what sounds good to him, he gives us directions to go
listen to a MIDI file [reproduced as computer synthesized sound].
I prefer to listen to his suggested roll on my Steinway. It is quite
good. Perhaps the discussion should be limited to comparing MIDI
files of each system.

I would like to point out that MIDI files of the various systems depend
on someone programming MIDI velocities that correlate to reproducing
system dynamics. If the MIDI files don't all sound good, then the
programming is wrong. Few programmers really understand what makes for
correct expression. Most of it is just an approximation.

The Duo-Art, Ampico, and Welte-Mignon are piano systems, not MIDI
systems. Let's not judge piano systems by listening to MIDI files.
