I have purchased a complete portable amplifier for a reasonable price.
The Roland CM-30 does a very nice job; it sells for about $175.  It
has inputs for all cable connector types and the volume is sufficient
for a small classroom full of people.  Roland also makes larger units,
I do not remember the selling price though.
