Welte-Mignon Music at Newport Music Festival
By Dorothy Bromage

The Newport Music Festival is a world renowned event that takes place
in Newport, Rhode Island, among the famous mansions. This year, its
40th season, concert-goers are treated to music by rolls played on the
Welte-Mignon reproducing upright grand moved from the home of Bob and
Claire Bowerman to Ochre Court [Salve Regina University]. Dr. Mark P.
Malkovich, III, Executive Director of the Festival, has arranged to
include the piano in a lovely chamber music setting. Before and
during intermission of seven concerts, the unique instrument is
featured playing "Red" Welte rolls, introducing those present to the
best in automatic musical instruments.

Information about the Newport Music Festival is available on the
following web site: http://newportmusic.org/ Clicking on "Calendar
of Events" and scrolling to the end reveals this notice:

"As a pre-concert treat, the Festival will present historic piano
roll performances before each of the above seven concerts in the
Library at Ochre Court. The restored Welte-Mignon reproducing piano
and antique piano rolls are courtesy of Robert Bowerman and the
Automatic Musical Instrument Collectors' Association (AMICA)."

The Festival runs from July 11 through July 27. Dates and times when
the piano is being demonstrated by Bob Bowerman and Kirk Russell are
July 13 (4:00 and 7:00), July 15 (5:00), July 17 (5:00), July 18
(4:00), July 19 (4:00), July 20 (4:00). A brochure is available by
