Web Sites & Experts to Identify Melodies
By Matthew Caulfield

This may be on the edge of the mechanical music field, but over time
many MMDers, including myself, have posted questions about tune
identification.

I wonder how many of us are old enough to remember Sigmund Spaeth,
1885-1965, who was billed on radio and in other media as the Tune
Detective? He prided himself on his ability to identify almost any
melody, not just current ones. Is there anyone alive today with that
ability?

I know there are various computer programs and web sites -- Tunatic
and Midomi, for example -- that can identify a tune if you transmit
it to them. But they seem to concentrate on modern popular music,
not on the oldies that would interest most of us. Are there any good
sites that have the resources to identify music of the ages?
