Restoring a Tanzbaer Player Accordion
By Ed Schmidt

Aura Satz asked in the 081022 MMD how to repair a Tanzbär Accordion.

If the keys are "not putting enough pressure," as you say, when you have
all the keys depressed by the song leader, then you would have notes
sounding or air escaping around the pads, which you will be able to hear.
In this case you need to replace the pads.

There are two causes for missing notes on the Tanzbär, assuming all of
the key fingers are functional:

    1. One of the valve pads has come unglued from the metal key and is
stuck to the wood board underneath. (You should be able to check
this by depressing each key and seeing that the pad is lifting.)

    2. There is dirt stuck in one of the reeds.

The easiest way to determine which notes aren't sounding is to use a
note-testing strip that actuates one note at a time as you move the
bellows. Note-testing strips (and also new music rolls) can be obtained
from Schmidt's Music Rolls ( http://www.music-rolls.com ). Knowing which
notes aren't sounding pinpoints which reeds to examine.

To expose the reed blocks, you must remove the roll motor and the screws
that hold the keyframe mechanism to the case. The reed plates are held
in place by right-angled rods that can be turned to allow the plates'
removal. On the reed plates are flap valves that allow air to move in
only one direction, since there are two reeds for each note. You may
have to replace these.

Hopefully you have problem #1.
