Nicholas Simons says that the only acceptable way to play
mechanical instruments is with recuts of original rolls.

Where does one draw the line as to what will satisfy a "purist"?
Frank Himpsl's rolls are made by optically scanning originals and
cutting new rolls with a laser.  To suit a purist, shouldn't the
rolls be produced with original methods?

How different is the "purity" if the original digital data of the
original rolls passes through a MIDI wireline on the way to the
instrument?

Six rolls is "no shortage" of music?  How long would an original
orchestrion be tolerated if there were only six rolls available?
