Holiday Greetings!  I'm in the process of recreating a missing rank
of pipes for my Seeburg 'F'.  In the research of the project on page
474 of Audsley's "Art of Organ-Building" I have encountered the term
"polished with black lead".  This substance is used to 'polish' the
wind ways and throats of the pipes.

What is 'black lead'?  Graphite, perhaps?  All evidence for the throat
sections of these violin pipes points to smooth as possible with laminar
air flow the goal.  That makes sense to me, but 'polished black lead',
would like to know.
