The Ivory Industry in England
By Keith Reedman

Long Eaton in Derbyshire (central England) was, for nearly a century,
the home of Herrburger Brooks, a piano action and keyboard manufacturer.
Both piano and organ keyboards were made and ivory was extensively used
until comparatively recent times. Actions and keyboards were exported
to the USA for Messrs. Steinway & Sons until the early years of the
present century. A photograph taken at Herrburger Brooks in about 1938
shows a consignment of newly arrived elephant tusks, one pair of which
is impressively large.
