Bernt Damm may be interested to know that the Musical Box Society of
Great Britain has been running a series of articles in its journal,
'The Music Box', which gives full workshop instructions for making
your own musical box.  The articles are written by Don Busby and
started in the Spring 2009 edition; the fifth article in the series
has just been published.  Membership of our society will allow Bernt
access to all of our back issues plus the invaluable access to members
who have experience in this field, either professional or amateur.

It is no secret that the steel used is commonly called gauge plate or
ground flat stock, specification BS-B01 or DIN-1.2510.  Amongst other
sources it can be obtained from Sheffield Gauge Plate Ltd who can be
contacted on 01142 335 291 (phoning from within GB), adding the
appropriate prefix depending on which country you live in.

The gauge plate is a medium alloyed, oil hardened steel, supplied
in various precision ground sizes in an annealed condition.  After
machining it will need to be hardened and tempered to provide the
correct characteristics to act as a musical box comb.  It will be
appreciated that making such a comb can only be done by a machinist
experienced in precision engineering who has in his workshop the
correct machine tools and heat treatment equipment.
