Reducing Turbine Suction Pump Noise
By John Taber

Hello MMD -- Back in 1970, I converted my Lexington Simplex player
piano to Model A Ampico. The Lee vacuum box made too much noise
for my liking so I lined the box inside and out with 1/4-inch thick
sheet lead. That cut the noise down to a whisper.

Yes, a little more heat, but the motor lasted 13 years, with plenty
of playing of those Jumbo Ampico rolls! I'm on the third motor now,
that I got from PPCo about four years ago for $99.00. Yes, it is
heavy, and I have to remove it if I move the piano anywhere but across
the room. I wanted to save the foot pumps for playing 88-note rolls
with expression.
