I've seen photos of very tall-case Steinway red Weltes with the
complete pump, expression action, and spoolbox located in the top of
the case.  The stack seems to occupy the entire bottom of the piano
case.

Can someone tell me the reason for this?  Is this an early version of
the upright Welte?  Were these sold only on the European market or did
some find their way to the U.S.?  I don't think I've ever heard of any
here.
