Hi MMD,  I'm sure Terry Smythe is correct with his view of how 65-note
rolls got wound on 88-note spools.  However, in my own shop it was done
deliberately.  I have a collection of about 700 65-note rolls.  During
the collecting and repair of these rolls I came upon several that had
broken pin end flanges or other problems that prevented me from using
them as originally intended.

Now I'm a very lucky man in that I have a 1906 Melville Clark player
piano that plays four types of rolls.  Important here is the fact that
it will play both 65-note and 88-note rolls.  Secondly, I have a roll
repair table that allows me to quickly reroll a 65-note roll onto an
88-note spool.

Have you ever tried to remake or repair a broken 65-note pin-end spool,
or find new ones or find new boxes?  So several of the rolls in my
collection have been converted.  They play perfectly.  To play them the
only thing I do differently is to set the chucks in the spool box to
accept the 88-note spool.

There were a gazillion of these 65-note rolls made and more than just
the Melville Clark piano that would play both types, so perhaps more
folks than just me did the same thing.
