Restoring a Player Piano Immersed in Salt Water
By Bill Maguire

Hi Joseph, I'm a player piano tech on Long Island, New York. I have
two storm-damaged instruments coming into my shop. In this instance,
the instruments were immersed in eight inches of water and remained
upright. At a minimum, the old bass strings must be replaced, as do
original lower tenor strings. One instrument is a player piano
converted to an orchestrion. It's likely that one of the roll drive
motors needs to be replaced, et cetera.

Please be very careful estimating _your_ job. From your description,
it seems like the entire piano was under salt water. Swollen and
warped keys, warped action parts, tight action centers, action springs,
pneumatics, bellows, valves, etc., etc. If you still want to take on
this job, give them a high estimate price. You can lower it if need be
whereas you can't raise a low estimate price as easily. I don't think
I would touch that job "with a 20 foot pole" unless the risk to me was
zero percent.
