Hi All,  Here's wishing everyone a very Happy New Year, and a question.
While it's been known for quite a few years that loosening the rewind
brake on some player pianos solves the problem of rolls that rip during
rewind, I don't recall ever reading why this solution actually works.
Does anyone know, or can they explain it in terms that those of us
without an engineering or physics degree can understand?

To a laymen like myself, it sort of defies logic.  I've heard something
like 'one end of the spool is actually moving around faster than the
other', or something like that.
