I don't have the technique, but I do have the colour!  It is "Deep Red
Mahogany", by Mohawk.  It is indeed an aniline dye, and it was used by
Wurlitzer, American Piano, Aeolian, and many furniture makers of that
era, usually on the bottom-of-the-line items.
