"La Mattchiche" Plays on Racca Piano Melodica
By Michael Woolf

Otherwise known as "The Pickle Song" ["Choo'n Gum"] as recorded in
the 1950s by Theresa Brewer, Dean Martin and others. The catchy tune
features on the soundtrack of "An American in Paris" as the theme for
dancing gendarmes, which puzzled me because of a legal prohibition on
the inclusion of non-Gershwin compositions in the work.

Then, after consultation with film historian Leonard Maltin, I found
that the music had been incorporated in the score for ballet performance
in the late 1930s, hence permission was granted for its use in the
later film. My interest had been aroused because I have a music book
of "La Mattchiche" that plays on my Racca Piano Melodica.
