Steinway Duo-Arts in Randolph Herr Collection
By Gordon Stelter

Dear Everyone, Regarding the alleged Hetty Green ("The Witch of
Wall Street") custom art case Steinway "OR" in the Randolph Herr
estate [150831 MMDigest], Ken Snowden kindly called to inform me that
he knew the AMICA founding member who bought it out of an astonishing,
"Newport-style" mansion that belonged to a church in Massachusetts,
which meshes with the facts of Hetty Green's son, "Colonel" Green's,
life.

Immediately after his mother died, Green built himself such a home at
Round Hill, Massachusetts, and appointed it sumptuously. Later, the
house was donated to the MIT [Massachusetts Institute of Technology],
and then was used by the Jesuits. (Please see the articles on
Wikipedia on Colonel Green, Hetty Green, and Round Hill, for more
details, and photographs.)

This settles for me (as I've suspected all along) that the piano was
his, not hers, but it's still plenty interesting. Please contact me
regarding the sale of this piano, and other Randolph Herr estate
instruments, and I will share all of the research I've accumulated.
Thanks!
