Reproducing The Master's Touch
By Robbie Rhodes

A visitor browsing the MMD Archive asks how much of the original
master's touch is heard when the piano roll performance is played
back (at a reproducing piano). He wonders if the original stylus
marked paper records could be reprocessed with modern techniques
to "extract the fine grain" details.

On the other hand, is the artist likely to approve the product
if it exposes the defects of his playing in fine grain detail?
We are told pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff spent many hours alongside
Ampico editor Edgar Fairchild before approving release of his Ampico
recordings.
