I don't see sostenuto on uprights very often but have you tried using
a cut-down bridle wire or backcheck wire (which is thicker than bridle
wires).  Both of these wires are standard piano supply items.  One
thinner item that screws in would be regulation screw eyes; they also
may work for you.
