Cracks in Calliope Brass Pipes
By Brian Thornton

MMDers, A repro Tangley CA-43 made in the 1980s, I would guess,
has recently come into the shop for refurbishing. The name plate
says "The Calliope Works," but the manual with it is Stanoszek's 1979
building plans, so I am not sure it was built by him or somebody else.

[ "The Calliope Works" is a trade name used by Bob Stanoszek.

The pipe lips were all blocked up with crud and the player needs
a re-do. It has the Doyle Lane plastic valves. Three of the larger
pipes have hairline cracks up near the tuning slugs. The cracks
don't seem to be affecting the sound of the pipes for now, but I am
wondering if there is a way to repair these cracks or prevent them
opening up further.

The main issue is that there is an automotive type air filter on
the blower that is really filthy and clogged. I have stopped at
a few auto parts places and looked on-line, and I just cannot find
it anywhere. The filter is 5.25" high by 5.25" OD and 3.375 ID.
If anyone can point me in the right direction to find a replacement,
I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,

Brian Thornton - Short Mountain Music Works
